Corneal Disease

Corneal disease refers to problem related with the cornea. There are many types of corneal disease with different causes. There are several common conditions that affect the cornea mainly injuries, allergies, Keratitis, Corneal ulcer, Dry eye, Corneal dystrophies also including ocular herpes, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, iridocorneal endothelial syndrome, Pterygium and many other disorders that may arise mostly as a result of heredity.

Common Symptoms of Corneal Condition

  • Intensive eye pain
  • Visual impairment such as blurred or cloudy vision
  • Tearing
  • Redness
  • Extreme sensitivity to light
  • Corneal scarring
  • Some patients have additional symptoms of headache, nausea, and fatigue

Treatment for Corneal Disease

  • Corneal disease treatments depend up on the severity of eye disease. It can only be diagnosed after a thorough examination.
  • Corneal disease in early stage can be treated by using eye drops, oral pills only upon recommendation by Ophthalmologist.
  • An advance corneal disease treatment can be done with Laser Treatment, Corneal Transplant Surgery and Artificial Cornea.

Corneal Ulcer:

A Corneal Ulcer is an open sore formed on Cornea. It is usually caused by infection (Bacterial, Viral, Fungal, Amoebdial). Other causes include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Eye Injury
  • Contact lens wear (unsterilized)
  • Any inflammatory disorder
  • Vitamin A deficiency

Symptoms of Corneal Ulcer:

  • Itchy, watery eye with pink eye/red eye
  • Pus like discharge
  • Blurred vision with pain
  • Sensitive to light

Treatment Includes:

  • Eye drops based on type of infection
  • Oral medication can also be prescribed
  • Severe cases may require Corneal transplant.

When to see a doctor?

  • Vision changes
  • Pain and discharge

How to Prevent?

  • Avoid sleeping with contact lens
  • Always rinse eye after going home
  • Always wash your hands before touching the eyes

Home Care:

  • Do not rub your eyes with fingers
  • Always wash hands before or after touching eyes
  • Do not touch eyes unnecessarily
  • Keep water away from your eyes rather put cool compression
  • Seek medical help as soon as possible.
